The following mathematical and physics symbols GIFs are designed to match the Times font as displayed by Netscape NavigatorTM or CommunicatorTM running on my Macintosh, but may differ in size on other systems or other browsers. The GIFs have transparent background, and are suitable for use with various background colours and images. To download the GIFs, either brush the image with your mouse to activate the "Save this Image as..." facility of your browser, or click on the respective caption for individual display of the GIF which can then be downloaded by pressing on "Save As" of the topbar pulldown menu under "File".
The name of the GIF without the .gif ending is given in the caption. A red asterisk (*) after a caption indicates that the <IMG SRC="..."> command for the corresponding GIF should be imbedded in ... to lower the position of the image below the text baseline.
Many math symbols, of course, as also characters of the Greek alphabet, are already available in the standard fonts. For a detailed overview of available special symbols provided for by iso8859-1, click here.

One problem arising in the use of these symbol GIFs is that the size relationship between font characters and GIFs differs from browser to browser, platform to platform, and hardware to hardware. Hence, something like (11) displays with the third "1" either larger or smaller than the first and second. The only way to avoid this seems to be to use GIFs for the other digits as well, and also for the parentheses. For this, the following additional GIFs are available, as e.g. in:
1.gif 2.gif 3.gif 4.gif 5.gif 6.gif 7.gif 8.gif 9.gif 0.gif
lpar.gif rpar.gif lcurl.gif rcurl.gif
Some boldface analogs in the same size and larger have been added for use in titles. They allow composing sets of indices such as e.g. the following:
